The thing about gender equality – Feminism in 5 easy steps

I am a feminist and that should say pretty much about me.

Of course some narrow-minded individuals, who know nothing about this movement, will conclude that I hate men and believe that women are superior.

In fact, feminism is all about gender equality.

I should end my article here, because I believe I have made my point.

Feminism = gender equality.

Easy, right?

Thing is, very few people understand what gender equality is. They think that it is all about what you have in your pants. That you shouldn’t be discriminated against because of your genitalia.

  1. Equality has no gender.

That’s a good start. Feminism 101. If somebody really gets that, then they could go on to Step 2 of Feminism.

Look at this photo.

What do you see? A man and a woman. They are happy. They are equal. Their happiness has equal significance to the world.

Now look at this second photo.

What do you see? A man and a woman. They are happy. They are equal. Their happiness has equal significance to the world.

Now a third photo.

What do you see? A man and a woman. They are happy. They are equal. Their happiness has equal significance to the world.

  1. Equality has no race.

Agreed? Do you have something else to say?

  • Yes? Then go back to Step 1 and really think about it.
  • No? Great. Ahead to Step 3.

Another photo! I think you are getting the grip on this. I am going to make it a little more difficult.

She is qualified enough to get the job.

And so is she.

Who will get the job?

  1. Equality has no religion.

If your answer was not:  ‘’The one who is even more qualified’’, back to Step 2. The rest can go ahead to Step 4.

For the next challenge, you will get 2 chocolate bars. You can keep one, of course. Who gets the other one?

  1. Equality has no social status.

If you had any reason to favor one or the other, go back to Step 3. If you split the 2nd bar so that each child has its treat, then you are allowed to go forward. If you donated your chocolate, so that each child has its own chocolate bar, then you might not need Step 5.

Who deserves to be happy?

We don’t need any photos for that. Look in the mirror. Look next to you. Look on the streets. EVERYBODY DESERVES TO BE HAPPY!

  1. Equality has no discrimination criteria

If you had any other answer, then you might need to sleep on it till you come to the same conclusion.

If you have made it past the 5 steps, then you are a feminist and I congratulate you for it. You are an amazing person and you will definitely change the world for the better!

You believe that everybody has the right to be happy and that they should be given the exact same chances to achieve this happiness. You are also aware that there are negative factors in this world which you cannot or which you can hardly influence, but at least YOUR JUDGEMENT is not going to be one of them!

***

Why have I associated Happiness with Feminism in this article? Because that is what feminism actually wants to achieve – that everybody gets to be HAPPY.

For that, we need equal chances. Preferably starting at birth. Since that fact is at this point difficult to influence, we have to make do with the current situation.

We start small, and say that women and men should have equal rights to be happy.

Ok. Done. The theory is easy to accept. It has become a FUNDAMENTAL RIGHT in many states.

Then we start challenging  ‘’white, rich and Christian feminism’’.

I admit, it gets tricky here and that is why a lot of so-called feminists get stuck at Step 1.

  • But what if the man or woman has a different race? – same rights to be happy.
  • But what if the man or woman has a different religion? – same rights to be happy.
  • But what if the man or woman has a different social status? – same rights to be happy.
  • But what if… – same rights to be happy!

Then we each check our privilege, which is a method of self-reflection.

YOU know your Privilege. You have acknowledged it sometime in your life. Some may have less or more privilege than you, but in an ideal world filled with feminists, it should not be what defines you. Your privilege has got you to a point where you can decide if you want to keep it for yourself or if you want to share it with the world.

Use your privilege and support the ideas of feminism.

Be a feminist and contribute to the world’s happiness.

In return, the world will contribute to yours.

L.
